PRE-CONVOCATION WORKSHOP
with The Rev. Dr. Patricia Dutcher-Walls
“Being Biblical Readers in a Pluralistic World”

What core questions help define the identity of a Biblical people and Biblical readers today? What values and attitudes are the marks of a Biblical people in an age of pluralism and diversity? This workshop will help participants understand and engage ways of reading Old Testament texts that reflect the changing and pluralistic world in which we find ourselves. After an initial lecture and discussion, participants will get some hands-on practice in small groups to explore some new perspectives on reading the Bible.

Dr. Dutcher-Walls is Professor of Hebrew Scripture and Dean of Studies at the Vancouver School of Theology. She holds a Doctor of Theology in Old Testament/Biblical Studies from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA and a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School. She has published several books and a number of articles in scholarly and religious journals. Her forthcoming book is Reading the Historical Books: A Student’s Guide to Engaging the Biblical Text. A life-long Presbyterian, she was ordained by the United Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1978 and is a minister in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. She has been active in the church through positions in campus chaplaincy, part-time congregational leadership, preaching, and social ministries. With a love of teaching, she has led numerous adult education courses, retreats, and continuing education courses. She is married to a Lutheran minister and has two grown children.

KEYNOTE: Understanding Mental Health and Adjustment Experiences of Immigrant Newcomers

Over 1.2 million Toronto residents were born outside of Canada. Immigration is a life-changing event that can have a profound impact on a person’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. In his presentation Dr. Kuo will discuss what psychologists have learned about the mental health challenges new Canadians face and how church members can support newcomers in their congregations.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ben Kuo

Born in Taiwan and educated in Canada and the U.S.A, Dr. Ben Kuo is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Windsor, Canada. As a practicing psychologist in Ontario he has over 20 years of clinical experience treating diverse clients, including international students, immigrants, refugees, racial/ethnic minorities and non-minority individuals in North America and Asia. Dr. Kuo’s research is in cross-cultural psychology and multicultural counseling/psychotherapy. He has published research on acculturation, cultural stress and coping, professional help-seeking attitudes and behaviours, and cultural adjustment and mental health among immigrants and culturally-diverse populations. In recent years, Dr. Kuo has been actively involved in training clinical psychology graduates to provide psychological treatment to refugee survivors of trauma and torture. Dr. Kuo is in high demand internationally as a lecturer and training and workshop leader.

Dr. Kuo is a member of the Toronto Formosan Presbyterian Church in Toronto. He and his family currently attend Lakeshore St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Windsor (Tecumseh), Ontario
