Ewart Historical Curriculum Project

The need

  • Cataloguing of books and resources – 300-500 hours of staff time
  • Installation of compact (high-density) shelving; the Ewart historical collection requires approximately 140 linear feet of space and consists of thousands of resources of varying types (including filmstrips, multi-piece kits, and recordings)
  • Purchase of a high-resolution scanner to provide access to this collection for research beyond Knox College

Total cost

$130,000 for compact shelving, scanner, and staffing; after anticipated funding through the Ewart Endowment Fund, $118,000 remains to be raised.

The project

Caven Library at Knox College is delighted to be organizing and cataloging the historical collection of Ewart College’s Christian Education materials – a curriculum that has historical significance, but also offers invaluable wisdom on Christian education for present and future students and researchers.

Last summer we began to sort the historical curriculum and determine a detailed plan. To provide access to this collection within and beyond Knox College, we now need to catalogue the books and resources, install compact shelving, and purchase a high-resolution scanner.

This project requires creation of a detailed list of the collection’s contents; we will add that list to our website and to the University of Toronto online catalogue. Researchers may then request to borrow materials from this collection in person, by mail, or electronically. To resolve the challenges for storage space, we wish to install compact or high-density shelving. Such shelving will provide much-needed additional space to house this valuable archival collection – as well as other Old Class and rare materials.

The majority of the books we are currently sorting and cataloguing are titles from the 1850s to 1920s. Approximately 30% of these are unique to Knox on the University of Toronto campus; some titles are even unique to Knox throughout North America.

When catalogued, classified, and stored appropriately, the Ewart historical collection will expand the reach of The McKay Educational Resource Centre by making it visible to anyone searching for resources through the University of Toronto online catalogue system or through the Knox College website via a Google search.

This project is a vital priority in Knox College’s Re:forming Tomorrow capital campaign. With creativity, innovation, and the availability of new technologies, we are finally able to tackle the challenges for space and cataloguing of Ewart’s historical collection.

We urgently need your support to make this unique, long-awaited project a reality. Give to sustain the legacy of Ewart College, and to continue to influence Christian education in the Presbyterian Church and beyond.
